TRUCK STOPS OPERATING AMIDST COVID-19

May 11, 2020 0min read
Whether delivering food, medical supplies or other essential goods and services, truckies have always been essential to Australia. As the unsung heroes of our nation, truckies keep going during COVID-19, delivering the necessities the country needs to keep moving. But with COVID-19–led nationwide closures of businesses, state border restrictions and other trading restrictions to help Australia “flatten the curve”, where can a truckie stop for breaks and food while on the road? Despite the ongoing closures of many businesses, service centres and truck rest stops remain open so truckies can continue to receive the support they need in order to get the job done. But which truck service centres and rest stops are open? We compile a quick list for you, so you can play your journeys. Rest stop requirements First, before we get into the details, the federal government has put in place a set of truckie-specific rest stop requirements—to protect both drivers and rest stop operators during the pandemic.
  • Social distancing

Social distancing rules continue to apply. Truckies must take care to maintain appropriate social distancing while using rest stop and service centre facilities.

  • Hand washing/sanitising

Truckies must regularly wash and sanitise their hands, especially before sitting and prior to leaving.

  • One-hour time limit

Truckies must not remain in lounges or use facilities (including showers and toilets) for more than one hour.

  • Informing use of shower facilities

Truckies must notify rest stop operator after showering to allow time for cleaning before the next patron.

  • Follow the rules

All COVID-19 related instructions from employees in the truck driver lounge must be followed.

  • Stay away if you display symptoms

If displaying symptoms of illness such as a fever, cough or sore throat, do not enter. Seek medical assistance. For more information, call the National Coronavirus Helpline at 1800 020 080 (open 24 hours).

Truck rest stops and service centres Next up’s a list of truck rest stops and service centres you can call into in the different states, complete with information on operating hours and available facilities. This list, however, is not exhaustive. For the full view of service centres and roadhouses still open during the pandemic, please refer to the NHVR COVID-19 Support Map here.
